Garage door cables get almost no attention until one fails. They are thin, they sit at the edges of the opening, and most people have never looked at them closely. But they carry the entire weight of the door alongside the springs, and when one goes the door does not simply stop — it drops on one side and jams.
This is what they do, how to catch one going bad, and why a snapped cable is the one fault we ask people not to work around.

What the cables actually do
Your springs counterbalance the door's weight. The cables are what transfer that force: a steel cable runs from the bottom bracket on each side up to a grooved drum on the torsion bar. As the door rises the cable winds onto the drum; as it lowers it unwinds.
Two cables, each carrying half the load of a door that can weigh well over a hundred kilos. They are under tension whenever the door is closed, which is why they are not a casual DIY item.
The warning signs, in the order they usually appear
Rust or discolouration near the bottom bracket. The lowest few inches sit closest to the floor and take the most moisture. This is where cables almost always start to go.
Visible fraying. A cable is wound from many fine steel strands. When a few break they stand proud of the cable like whiskers. Once you can see fraying, the cable is on borrowed time.
Slack on one side. With the door closed both cables should be taut. A cable that has come loose on the drum or stretched will hang slightly. That is also how cables end up jumping off the drum entirely.
The door closing unevenly. One side reaching the floor before the other means the two sides are no longer carrying equal load. Sometimes that is the drum, sometimes the cable, and either way it gets worse.
Why our climate is hard on cables
Cable failure is not evenly distributed across the region. Homes near water take the worst of it — the lakeside communities in Mount Laurel, the streets running down to the Delaware in Cinnaminson and Woodbury, and any garage that stays damp through a South Jersey winter.
Salt from winter roads gets carried into the garage on car tyres and settles at floor level, which is exactly where the cable ends sit. That combination corrodes the strands from the outside in, and the damage is often well advanced before anything looks wrong from a standing position.
What happens when one snaps
The side with the broken cable loses its support. The door drops at that corner, twists in the tracks, and usually wedges. If the opener is running when it happens it will keep pulling against a door that is no longer square, which is how cables turn into bent tracks and damaged panels.
The remaining cable is now carrying a load it was never sized for, so a second failure often follows quickly.
Why we replace both
Same reasoning as springs. Both cables were fitted on the same day, have lifted the same number of times, and have sat in the same damp corner of the same garage. When one has corroded through, the other is not in different condition — it is simply a little behind.
Replacing the pair keeps the two sides matched, which matters for how the door tracks and for how evenly the springs are loaded.
What to check yourself, safely
With the door fully closed, stand to one side and look at the bottom few inches of each cable where it meets the bottom bracket. You are looking for rust, broken strands, and whether both cables look equally tight.
That is the whole safe inspection. Do not pull on the cables, do not loosen the bottom brackets, and do not work on anything while the door is open — the bottom bracket is under spring tension and is the single most dangerous fitting on the door.
⚠️ Do not run the door on a broken cable, and do not touch the bottom brackets. The bottom bracket carries full spring tension whenever the door is closed; loosening one is how people get seriously hurt. If a cable has snapped, leave the door where it is, do not use the opener, and call. Forcing a crooked door through the tracks turns an hour of work into a panel replacement.

Can I still use my garage door with a frayed cable?
You can, but you are running on borrowed time and the failure will come without warning. Once strands are visibly broken the cable should be replaced before the door is used again — the second cable will be under extra load the moment the first goes.
Why is my garage door hanging crooked?
Almost always a cable that has snapped or jumped off its drum on one side. That corner loses its support and the door twists in the tracks. Stop using the opener — running it will bend the track and can damage the panels.
How long do garage door cables last?
Typically six to ten years, but that depends far more on moisture than on age. Cables in damp garages and near water fail considerably sooner, and salt carried in on car tyres over winter accelerates it further.
Should both cables be replaced together?
Yes, on almost every door. Both cables have done identical work in identical conditions since they were fitted, so when one fails the other is close behind. Replacing the pair also keeps the two sides of the door matched.
Is replacing a garage door cable a DIY job?
We would not recommend it. The cables attach at the bottom brackets, which carry full spring tension whenever the door is closed. That fitting is the most dangerous part of the assembly and the reason cable work is one of the jobs best left to someone who does it daily.
